Western Caribbean Cookbook and a bit of collective wisdom

What do you get when you mix a rally full of Ocean Cruising Club members, their boats and the waters of the Western Caribbean – well a cookbook of course! The “Western Caribbean Cookbook” was an idea fuelled from the caring and sharing nature of all the amazing people who participated in the Ocean Cruising Club 2018 / 2019 Suzie Too Rally. These are people who I have shared this adventure with, people from many nations sharing stories of travel, adventure, boat projects and from time to time swapping recipes.



Everyone in this rally has made a contribution, whether it was assisting with the administration, organising a land tour, conducting yoga & noodling classes, sharing expertise, tools & knowledge or conducting the morning net. This book is my contribution.



Our original plan was to head over to Europe on completion of the rally. But with all sailors’ plans – they change. Some say a sailor’s plan is written in the sand at low tide – it seems that ours were. On the eve of our departure to San Andrés while at the Pacific Puddle Jump presentation, we got the calling of the Pacific. So we left the rally in Panama and have turned left instead of right; Perigee is slowly homeward bound.

We found a piece of paradise

Perigee in Paradise.  Two years, eight months and one day after moving onboard Perigee we found paradise! We moved onboard on February 16, 2017 in Le Marin, Martinique one of the Caribbean Islands and found our paradise on October 17, 2019 in the Raroia lagoon, one of the Tuomotu Islands of French Polynesia. We put 12, 548 nautical miles under the keel in that time and spent many hours preparing Perigee for this kind of remote area cruising. Raroia Atoll (Rah-row ee ah). We're the red arrow top right. The entrance is in the middle of the west side. Raroia is remote, being as it is pretty much in the middle of the Pacific Oceans. Altogether we sailed 33 days to get there from Panama. 30 days to Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas and another 3 days to Raroia in the Tuomotus. That's Panama top right and Australia bottom left and Raroia in the middle. Actually we can't claim to have found this piece of paradise, it was already discovered by our friends on Cap

Harry Honda

Harry Honda is our trusty electric start 9.9 hp, 4 stroke outboard motor. We bought Harry in Newport, Rhode Island shortly after we bought Perigee (October '16) and while we were not looking for a 4 stroke electric start motor, Harry had been abandoned by his previous owner after just 20 hours of use and was available at the right price. Dave wanted a 2 stroke 15 hp motor but 2 stroke motors are no longer available in the US. I was not disappointed with Harry, he is a quiet running, sweet smelling, push to start motor in an attractive silver colour that matched the dinghy. Not that colour matters. We take delivery of Harry and the dinghy Nov '16 In April 2017 while in Bequia, St Vincent & the Grenadines we decided to get protective chaps made for our dinghy. So that Harry did not feel left out we had a little coat made for him too. Doesn't he look smart in blue? Maybe colour does matter! New look Harry in blue.
