Carnival in St Maarten

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure to spend the day with our new friends Steve and Nancy. We volunteered with Steve and Nancy on the Heineken regatta and had a great time with them. They retired to St Martin last year just before hurricane Irma. They spent the night of the hurricane with their two dogs in their shower recess. In the morning they discovered that all was gone except the bedroom and the bathroom. Their furniture strewn all over the place and some never seen again. Only one lounge chair survived. It was the one moved into the bedroom for Nancy who at the time had just broken her ankle. No running away from that storm. They formed strong bonds with their neighbours  during the clean up immediately after Irma. Friendships that they hold dear. They were later evacuated but returned to recommence their lives in their beloved St Martin / St Maarten.

We met a lot of people who 'survived' Irma. Each had an incredible story to tell. As the community pulls itself together under the slogan "SMX Strong" the bad memories fade and are replaced with good ones. Carnival, a celebration of dance and music is as popular as ever. Time to Par-teeee to the Soca!

What is Soca, I hear you ask. Well, its the SOul of CAlypso. Check out Doh Play Dat by Machel Montano and try not to dance.
